The Devil and Miss Prym

Reviews 2008. 12. 27. 18:40

I just finished this.
Perhaps my first book I read since August.
It took me like 3 months to finish this, actually.
But overall, it took me only like 2-3 hours, including the re-reading time.
Just a 200 page book.

I don't know.
I have read almost all Coelho's book.
He has been a saint of my faith since I read The Alchemist and Eleven Minutes, but I am being less impressive of his ideas as I read more of his books.
It's just that whatever he wrote are stuff I have already thought of more than 3 years ago,
and I already have ended similar conclusions as his messages through his books. For somebody whose philosophy for life is set (that's me), his book doesn't have a huge impact no more.
But nonetheless, it's always good to confirm that my philosophy is shared by somebody like Coelho.

The book, talks about temptations of unethical deeds - thus it calls battle of good and evil within human beings. HIs metaphors in this books are not that metaphorical, but rather straight forward.

For example, the story is set in a small town called Viscos with Celtic history, where there is no children left but old people. Some could say it's paradise for its peacefulness, some could say it's a town destined to die with no children. It's upon the choice of the reader to see the place as heaven or hell... as the world it is today.

Similary, he draws the final message that a deed, which can lead to good and evil all depends on the choice. The word conscience is never mentioned in the book, but afterall, it's all about whether the person's conscience is set or not.

I guess I meditated on conscience when I was 19 years old or so.

Alhtough his stories are not as impressive, I am going to read all of his books no matter what. I told myself I would read all his books and all Gabo's books anyway. If I say it, I really mean it to be happened.

I think I only have one more book from Coelho to read, and a lot mroe from Gabo - I only read 3 books from him, but I read a number of his short stories. I am just a huge fan of magic realism.

If I avoid myself from wathcing all the TV and dramas I got on my computer, and Netflix movies, I think I can finish 2-3 more books on this weekend. Somehow, I can read fast this weekend. Weird. This never happened...since forever. I missed this feeling. Or I must be missing something so I am devoting myself to something else.
