Song

Stay, O sweet, and do not rise!
The light that shines come from thine eyes;
The day breaks not: it is my heart,
Because that you and I must part.
Stay! or else my joys will die
And perish in their infancy.

These "rhymes" are somehow controversial. In John Donne's book, "Songs and Sonnets", this is a separate poem titled "Song" with two other poems titled as "Song" as well...

Whereas, it has been known that he wanted this part to be the first stanza of his poem "Break of Day"...and for some sources available, "Break of Day" is not the poem of 3 or 4 stanza poem, but just those 6 lines above...

It's very weird, and I think the poem "Break of Day" is better with the part above as first stanza...

Anyway, it's probably because I like those lines best among his writings. Well, actually, first 4 lines of that part, too. When I first read that Song, it only had

Stay, O sweet, and do not rise!
The light that shines come from thine eyes;
The day breaks not: it is my heart,
Because that you and I must part.

...

Still...it's my favorite from John Donne...Perhaps the greatest love poet...
