Exams vs Vacation

Daily Words 2009. 5. 23. 14:28
I was planning to go home in November.
If I go around Thanksgiving time, I would be leaving when the office is not as busy and also I could save a couple days of my vacations on those holidays.

I thought the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) exam would be in December, so I presumed that November must be the perfect time.
I was chatting with Ersa, and somehow, I found myself checking the FRM website, and guess what...
the exam is on the Saturday after Thanksigiving.

Great.
Just f-ing great.

Now, I have to plan everything,
and I might even have to feel guilty that I am to leave office for a long time when things could be busy, too.
I just hate the feeling of guilt.
I sometimes slack off at work, but I try to get things done as needed, and when I have less work to handle, I feel uneasy.
Now, to take a long break, I feel the guilt that I should find the perfect time - although my boss said that there is never a right time for a vacation, work-wise.

But there is no choice when I have not gone home for 3 years, and I haven't seen my dad for 2 years now.
I really, really want to go back home this year.
I've been wanting this since late last year when things were not working out.

That's why when my boss said okay about my 2-week vacation on November,
I got so excited that I sent email to all my close friends.

Well, now I can't.

I have the following exams in plan:
1) CFA - June 5, 2009
2) Society of Actuary Financial Mathematics exam - August 15, 2009
3) FRM - November 21, 2009

and I would be going to Boston for the American Society of Appraisers Business Valuation Conference on October 19-21.

And I would hate to go to the Philippines during December, and even for logistic reasons with the US consulate office in Manila, I can't go home in December.

So, the best time to go home would be sometime between August 16, 2009 and September 15, 2009.
FRM is a very intense exam, and I wouldn't be able to study when I go home anyway.
July is also an option, but I am afraid that it's before my Actuary exam.

I need to plan and think well over this long weekend and tell that to my boss.
Sigh...
I hate this...
But I really, really want to go home.

Licenses/ Recognitions

Daily Words 2008. 12. 12. 18:41
Many people...or some people I know question this...
and when I explain, they seldom do not know,
and I find it hard to explain...
So here it is.

I am trying to take exams for the following licenses/ recognitions:

1) ASA BV Courses (http://appraisers.org/courses/index.cfm?fuseaction=get_pov&id=B and http://appraisers.org/courses/index.cfm?fuseaction=get_adv&id=B)

2) SOA (http://www.soa.org/education/exam-req/)

3) CFA (http://www.cfainstitute.org/cfaprog/index.html)

4) FRM (http://www.garp.com/frmexam/)

I am scheduled to finish 4th and last basic ASA BV courses by February 2009.

I plan to take SOA-ASA level 2 exam first half of 2009, and more in the latter half of 2009.
CFA level 2 on June 2009 if I passed level 1. If not, I will take level 1 again on June 2009.

FRM should be on December 2009, unless something unexpected happens.

Except FRM, each recognition involves several exams over several years.

Why am I studying for them? Well, first of all... I don't want to feel rusty.
Some may be useful in my career, and some may not.
I think it's really fun dealing with risks in the finance,
as essential it is for the returns of the related assets - and some researchers in finance are lacking in obvious skills of econometrics and stochastic analysis. I pointed their mistakes in their working papers.

But I just don't want to feel rusty. I don't want to feel my brain aging and losing senses.
It's freaking tough to study everyday a couple of hours after work, but I just want to keep it rolling.

Well, since the exam season in 2008 is over, until my next exam in 2009,
I plan to take some online or offline business writing class. Boy, I suck in writing...-_-;;
