I don't think I am much of a singer.
I never thought I was.
I am not particularly bad at it either.
But I never really practice,
and the songs I am really used to or memorized are not for public singing.
My dad is a great singer, but I am just not into it. I didn't sing much as I grew up either despite of all the volumes of music library I have had since I was a kid.
I also limited myself to only a few genres in my teens.
I thought real musicians should play instruments or compose.
So, other than classical and jazz players, I listened to only metal for 3 years, and added alternative rock songs to my list for next 3 years.
Then gangsta rap was added after that - because I was mesmerized by how they make things rhyme.
I just avoided love songs unless they were really good: both musically and lyrically.
But eventually, I was back to all kinda music again - except the teenage bands singing.
Also some dumb dance singers were very much avoided.
So all the songs I memorized are songs mostly about negative things in the world, sang often with or without cusses.
Even the love songs, I love those parting songs than "proposal" songs.
I just am more empathetic with songs about pain than happiness.
So, I don't know many songs appropriate to sing when someone else is around to listen.
I can't sing Metallica songs about suicide or self-torment (Fade to Black; Unforgiven I, II & III; Nothing Else Matters, etc) or raps of Snoop Dogg or Jay-Z I've memorized with cusses (Encore, Can I Get A, Gin and Juice, etc). They got great melody (or great beats in the instance of the rap songs) and great lyrics that rhyme.
But it's very inappropriate at almost all times. Raps could be easier, but they are not singing, and I don't think I am a rapper either.
I do love Robbie Williams and Korean singers like 김동률, 신승훈, 이승환, 이승철 and etc, but for some reason, I never can memorize their words. I enjoy listening to them and humming along, but I am more of a listener than a sing-along fella.
But I tried to sing 김동률 songs at home today...
1) Because his songs are smooth and sometimes stay within a range of regular guy's low voice (although he can go really low and pretty high - not really high).
2) His lyrics are not dumb, often very good. E.g, 아이처럼 and 취중진담 got very good lyrics.
I think I can "endure" some of his notes,
but I barely can speak in front of many people, I doubt if I can sing myself a song when there are others to listen when I am sober. I did go to karaoke, but the last time was when I was in the Philippines. Those times, I loved 휘성, too, actually... But yeah, his lyrics are mystery to me, too. I just never tried to memorize them.
Well, I will give a shot. Maybe some of 김동률 songs, I can try.
But yeah... weird.
